When you mention cordless vacuum cleaners normally a handheld mini cleaner comes to mind, but there are larger models out there which do a great job too. The convenience of not having a lead getting in the way or having to be near a mains socket is a big plus. This obviously means recharging after use is necessary but most come with a docking station so they’re on charge when not in use.
There are many cheaper models on the market but if you want something a bit special then it’s worth taking a look at the DC44. Dyson is a company right at the front of technology and this vacuum cleaner is no exception.

This is an elegantly designed, almost “space age” machine with its long slender lightweight aluminium wand, which means you can use it in almost the same way as a traditional upright cleaner. For cleaning the stairs or in the car, the wand is removable so the motorised head fits on to the main machine making it smaller to handle those type of jobs.
Many vacuum cleaners have a bag to collect dust, these can get clogged causing a loss of suction power. This one doesn’t have a bag, instead it uses its patented cyclone technology. Dust and dirt are spun out of the air and into the bin by powerful centrifugal force, meaning no loss of suction power.
It runs on a digital motor which is lighter, smaller and faster than a conventional electric motor, it spins three times faster making this the most powerful cordless vacuum cleaner.
The floor tool is motorised and has two types of bristle, ultra-fine anti-static carbon fibre for hard floors and stiff nylon for carpets.
- Small but very powerful motor
- Famous root cyclone technology
- Easy to empty dust and dirt
- Good battery life
- Not really a replacement for main vacuum cleaner
The name Dyson goes a long way when it comes to vacuum cleaners because of their approach to technology. This particular model has been available for a few years now but even by today’s standards, it performs very well.
It isn’t really meant as a replacement for your main cleaner but many people do just that once they’ve bought one. That’s probably because it works so well, which is down to the root cyclone technology preventing loss of suction power and the small but incredibly powerful motor.
The convenience of being battery powered is fairly obvious but the downside of that is needing to recharge it. The battery life is good though, with some customers thinking that the published 20 minutes cleaning time is maybe on the side of caution.
Emptying the dust and dirt is very easy – just the push of a button and its gone! This is really useful as most people don’t enjoy the mess caused by emptying dust into the bin. There’s no problem here.
It’s not a cheap vacuum cleaner, particularly when you consider it’s not really meant to be your main cleaner. Balance this against the fact that it does a very good job of cleaning, it’s built to last and has all the good points of any Dyson cleaner. The Dyson DC44 Animal continues to be an in demand vacuum cleaner and it’s not surprising to see why.
